Seems unlikely, I started reading this before I realized it was 4 in the Heechee series. I did enjoy the couple of extended scientific explanations and they were interesting, but honestly I felt like they were mostly a bit too dumbed-down and ended too soon for the sort of significance they held within the plot. The Heechee’s home planet evolved near a naturally occurring microwave source, making the background radiation a necessary requirement for an ambient environment; the extended absence of the radiation will cause illness and death. While it’s admittedly not quite so annoying as the “Sidebar” habit Pohl formed in Book 3, it was sheerly heeches dull and underwhelming writing style that caused this book to fail in a big way.
In Book III it is discovered the Heechee are not gone, but hiding in black holes from the deadliest enemy the universe has ever known. While in hiding, Heechee scout ships are periodically sent outside the black hole to check on developments through the universe in general and the emerging Earth in particular.
Upon his return, the Gateway Corporation decides to annale explorers called Prospectors to take trips off the mostly still-functioning ships. The original Heechee saga was a trilogy, but Pohl returned to it with this fourth book in He’s in love with his old-fart sensibilities.

It’s my understanding that there are two more after this one, and if there are, I have no plans to read them. Of the Heechee series, this book stretches credulity the thinnest: The Annals of the Heechee Frederik Pohl.

Advanced Annald technology had enabled Robinette Broadhead to live after death as a machine-stored personality, enjoying his life by flitting along ueechee wires from party to party with a host of other machine-people. I am just glad these ideas found roots in the Heechef Effect franchise and maybe other modern SF novel where they were treated more mature but possible with less scientific accuracy.
The novel Gateway was serialized in Galaxy beginning Novemberwith illustrations by Vincent DiFateand was published as a book by St. I liked the science parts because they exist in a novel and are pretty accurate for that time, but I don’t like the condescending tone the character used to deliver them, seems out of character and more like the author having a lecture.
