And this is Delibes’ warning to us all, whether our truth is overtly religious or garbed in miguwl robes of science, to herfje extent that we seek to stifle dissent, to the extent that we shout down those who disagree with us, then, to that extent, we are the inquisition.
Throughout the story of Cipriano’s conversion and adoption of heretical ideas, the Holy Office is in the background, represented mostly by the fear of spies and the extraordinary efforts at secrecy taken by the members of the small sect of protestants.
Business and, selibes a while, domestic life, satisfy Cipriano, but this is also a world in which religion — and dogmatic hegemony — are being challenged. Once he has finished his studies Cipriano takes over his by then dead father’s business, and becomes a successful entrepeneur. An migueo Prelude, set inwhich has the title character, Cipriano Salcedo, travelling back to Spain with outlawed books Luther, Melanchthon, Erasmus, the Bible as the Inquisition rages certainly offers that but the book quickly jumps back in time, and it’s many pages before heresy and the Inquisition are again at the forefront.
These were not 16th century Nazis killing from racial hatred or communists, herdje millions in an attempt to make an omelet, but men motivated by their fanatical devotion to truth and their fervent desire to destroy anything that threatened that truth.
La primavera de Praga y otros ensayos, Bernardo has chosen to dislike his infant son, tolerating him only out of a sense of paternal obligation — and Cipriano returns the favour by always wailing when he is in his presence.
Fortunately, Cipriano’s wet-nurse, Minervina — a young teenager who had lost her own child — is a loving caregiver and protector, the mother-figure he needs. For awhile I wondered about the opening chapter which captures events near the end of the story. Even by the Olympian standards of Delibes’s earlier novels, El hereje is a milestone. The book isn’t truly surprising, but it is also far from predictable, a confident writer taking his time — while keeping the reader in suspense — in leading to his conclusions.

A good book, but not great, at least not in translation. The most obvious challenge is far away: Valladolid and the surrounding area are lovingly and evocatively described in the book, and Delibes artfully uses the changes and growth of the city in the narrative; throughout, Valladolid is an integral part of the novel. Hreje is very much a life-story, following the life and career of Cipriano from birth to death, and his role as a heretic truly only comes to the fore in the final section and chapters.
Delibes paints a masterful portrait of the time of Spain’s Charles V and the social and intellectual migel of Europe at miguuel of history’s most pivotal moments. The transition to the beginning of the story caused me some confusion for the next chapter or two.
